About me

About Me

Hi, I'm Marianne. I'm a freelance science journalist working between London and France.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of peeking at science's innermost secrets, from the bench to the broadsheets. I have shared drinks with Nobel Prize winners, delved into the depths of Finland's underground repository for nuclear waste, tracked mysterious uranium cubes from the Manhattan Project back to Germany's first prototype nuclear reactor, examined the motivations behind tech tycoons' disastrous explorations of the deep sea, deciphered the intricate business case behind NASA's return to the moon, and more.

I was once a scientist daydreaming about writing while  scrutinizing malaria parasites through a microscope. After a PhD in Bordeaux and a postdoc at Imperial College London , I bid my pipettes a teary farewell, and I turned my attention to my passion: writing compelling stories about the latest in science.

After a master's in science communication from Imperial College London and a brief stint freelancing, during which I held a recurring slot in the Imperial College Podcast, I joined The Lancet.

There, I was the editorial and feature editor. I wrote agenda-setting editorials, mainly focusing on global health and health policy, and edited stellar freelance reporters to deliver weekly news features covering health around the world. I was also The Lancet's representative for the African Journal Partnership Program.

I then joined Nature Medicine as a news and opinion editor. I refined and tailored groundbreaking opinion pieces from leading physician-scientists on the latest in cutting-edge health technologies. I also tailored monthly news features about the latest developments in science.

As the pandemic progressed, however, I decided it was time for me to join the ranks of intrepid journalists fighting for accurate representation of science and health. I joined Business Insider as their only science reporter in the UK. I was embedded in the news team, which gave me a rare insight into how science fits into the broader news landscape. I delivered daily science news and conducted in-depth investigations on a wide range of scientific topics.

Since 2024, I have been a freelance reporter. I cover health, tech, society, and more.

When I'm not reading or writing about the latest in science, you can find me pottering around Paris and London on the lookout for an art exhibit or a gig, or enjoying the sun in a lovely green garden.
