About me

Hi, I'm Marianne. I'm a freelance science journalist working between France and London.

I was once a scientist, daydreaming about writing while scrutinizing malaria parasites through a microscope. But after a PhD and a short postdoc, I bid my pipettes a teary farewell and turned my attention to writing.

I worked as an opinion and health news editor for The Lancet and Nature Medicine, writing editorials and editing opinion pieces and features covering the latest in health news from around the globe.

As the pandemic progressed, however, I decided to grab my pen and start writing news for myself. I joined Business Insider as the UK science reporter embedded in the news team, delivering daily science news, features and investigations. Since 2024, I have been a freelance science reporter. I cover health, tech, society, and more.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of peeking at science's innermost secrets, from the bench to the broadsheets. I have shared drinks with Nobel Prize winners, delved into the depths of an underground repository for nuclear waste, tracked mysterious uranium cubes from the Manhattan Project back to Germany's first prototype nuclear reactor, examined the motivations behind tech tycoons' disastrous explorations of the deep sea, deciphered the intricate business case behind NASA's return to the moon, and more.

When I'm not reading or writing about the latest in science, you can find me in London, on the lookout for an art exhibit or a gig, or in my garden in France exploring my backyard jungle.
